Upton-upon-Severn
The local town is just 1.½ miles away and has been a major river crossing for many centuries it is now a bustling town with a variety of independent shops, restaurants and pubs; it also boasts a lively Marina, built on the site of the old Upton brick works, and the leisure cruiser "Conway Castle" operates from the Town Moorings. There is also a public library, school, fire station and a new "one stop" health centre on the outskirts of the town which accommodates all of the various health services. There are several churches and in the High Street stands the Memorial Hall which is used for various functions and is also home to the Town Council and Clerk.
The main town lies mostly on the higher ground to the West of the river with the Town's Moorings alonside West Waterside.
This is an attractive pedestrian area with several pubs and is the focus for the various festivals hosted in the town throughout the year. It is here that the Morris Dancers perform during the Spring Folk Festival and where the occassional visiting market from mainland Europe is sited. It is an interesting area around which to meandre as there is always something to watch.
The Jazz Festival in June attracts artists and visitors from around the world with events held in many locations around the town with several "Canvass" concert venues sited on both sides of the bridge. The
Blues Festival in July and Water Festival at the end of August are very popluar with visitors and locals alike.
The illuminated boats and closing firework display is a fitting end to a poular weekend focussed on events in and around the waterfront.
